Summer Science Digital Health Courses

Are you interested in pre-med? Yearning to learn more about neuroscience? Passionate about social justice in relation to international medicine? Consider enrolling in one of Molly's digital Health courses this summer. Work is done independently at home, earns a letter grade, and appears on the high school transcript as a science course. Interested students should email April Haddock to get signed up, and pick up their books from Tamara before the end of the school year.

*This class is only open to full time enrolled students of Northwest Academy.

Elective: Neuroscience, Brain, & Behavior
In this digital science elective, students explore health from two interconnected perspectives: personal and community health. Students complete eight modular assignments and discussion questions from the perspective of neuroscience. Topics of study include brain wiring, stress, sleep, memory, emotional well-being and food and nutrition. They learn about how poverty and homelessness impact one’s physical health and access to health care, and learn about the societal effects of substance abuse and domestic violence. The course culminates with a critical essay project on the text Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell to synthesize and reflect on key themes, from bullying to healthy relationships.

Elective: International Health and Social Justice
In this digital science elective, students explore the field of international health by reading the book Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. Through six engaging modular assignments, students learn about compelling global health issues, including guinea worm, malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. The course culminates with a creative final project to synthesize and reflect on key themes, from structural violence to holistic community health care, in the form of a letter to the editor, video project, essay, or original work of art. Prerequisites: Instructor approval.
