Northwest Academy’s youngest students focus on building a strong academic and social foundation for middle school success. Classes are kept intentionally small so as to provide students with greater individual attention and opportunity.
In English, the emphasis is on building solid writing skills to prepare students for more rigorous work at subsequent grade levels. Works of literature and critical thinking are key areas of concentration. In both Visual Art and Ancient Civilizations, students learn about ancient cultures and civilizations. In Life Science, students develop basic skills and knowledge to ensure their success at higher levels of science. In Outdoor School, students spend a week exploring hands-on science at an overnight camp near Portland.
In Music and Tap Dance, students learn focus, concentration, rhythm, and performance skills. In math, students are evaluated and placed according to their skill level, typically in Math Foundations, Pre-Algebra, or Algebra 1. Learning Lab teaches essential executive function skills, such as time management, personal organization, learning strategies, and effective work habits. Students may take an optional world language course, including Mandarin, Spanish or French, at the Introductory through Fluency levels.
