Will Gerould Memorial Show Opens June 4th

The Angry Pigeon is honored to host a celebration of the life and work of Northwest Academy Alum Will Gerould, class of 2008. A talented visual artist, Will passed away this previous November. We will be hosting receptions to commemorate his astounding visual artwork on Thursday, June 4th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday, June 5th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. All are welcome and invited. The Angry Pigeon Gallery is located at 712 SW 11th Ave, Portland, OR 97205.

At age 15 Will Gerould applied a gifted eye for composition and a mature artist’s visual sensibility to create a series of (mostly) ink drawings. These raw, visceral images enable the viewer to experience the open conduit of Will’s uninhibited creativity.

His work is a somatic meditation, a freedom dance on paper. The lines, splatters, and washes in his drawings embody the questions “What if? What now? Why not?” Will made his own brushes and created resists by combining household chemicals with India ink. His studies in Buddhism, Quantum Physics and Mathematical Fractals are manifested in his explorations in textures and patterns.

Will’s hypersensitivity to stimulation is reflected by his innate ability to draw a gestural line, succinctly capturing the essence of the human experience while producing visual tension. His wry sense of humor and disregard for societal expectations either affronts the viewer or becomes an inspirational wellspring. Just as the making of art was an emotional release for him, he hoped his energy would transcend beyond the moment and connect him with the viewer. For the viewer, his spirit continues to live.
