Project Theatre Presents: A Piece of My Heart

“A Piece of My Heart by Shirley Lauro is based on a book called, “A Piece of my Heart: The Stories of Twenty-Six American Women Who Served in Vietnam” by Keith Walker. The book documents extensive interviews with twenty-six real women who served in Vietnam. The play version whittles those twenty-six women into six distinctive characters, five nurses and one country western singer who sings for the troops. Act I of the play covers who they are, how they came to their decision to serve, and what their experience was. While each of the women left a piece of their heart in Vietnam, when they return to the US in Act II and are forced to deal with their own reintegration into a ‘normal’ life as well as the political climate of the country they realize that replacing that missing piece is going to be more difficult than anticipated.
