We are looking forward to seeing you all at the warehouse on Friday. Thank you for joining the Black Resilience mutual aid effort.

The Black Resilience Mutual Aid team works to address the needs of our community through means other than direct financial support. Our team manages incoming requests, matches donations with needs, and coordinates pickup and delivery of in-kind donations. When possible we connect folks to services such as yard work or car repair.  Black Resilience mutual aid network has proven that solutions for our community can come from within our community. Even in the hardest of times, we can work together to inspire solidarity, strength, resilience, and family.

  • A brief description of what to expect: You'll be sorting donating items and creating personalized packages in preparation for delivery to recipients in our community! We will give you a quick orientation of how/where to sort the items. Please read through the one-page Sorting Guidelines posted at the warehouse before you begin. Feel free to ask any questions.
  • Where & when to arrive/get dropped off: Please come to 221 NE 122nd, Portland, OR 97230 at the beginning of your shift. We are in an old Safeway space. There are sliding glass doors covered in paper, and marked "BRF".  Mutual Aid Coordinator, O'Nesha Cochran, or I will be there to open the doors for you.
  • Any COVID safety requirements: Please make sure to wear a mask. We have gloves and sanitizer available.
  • What to wear: Comfortable clothing and shoes. You may want a jacket or heavy sweatshirt in the warehouse as it can be cold inside.

These shifts will involve some different duties, including helping in the kitchen, sorting donations, and creating care kits. Each day looks a little different, which is why it’s great to have many hands on site.

To anyone who has not volunteered in 2021, you will need to go to our website for paperwork. Please read our volunteer handbook, watch our training videos, and make sure to get signatures for the Code of Conduct and Waiver (parent/guardian signatures required if under 18). The volunteer handbook will answer questions about logistics for the day such as appropriate clothing/footwear, what to bring, and arrival. The whole process should take about an hour, and you don’t need to sign up on our calendar afterward. Here is the link to get started: https://blanchethouse.org/volunteer/

PORTLAND AUDUBON SOCIETY (12–3 pm):
Contact: Nora Scholey
Permission Slip!

Here is some information for the work party:

  • You will be doing a few general “spring cleaning” activities at our Cornell campus/sanctuary.  We have a garden to prep and some siding on our buildings that needs to be spruced up after our campus has been fairly empty during covid.  We are getting ready for our visitors and, eventually, our staff who will be returning to our premises and our nature trails.  I am still finalizing some details with our Sanctuary Manager - he may have some other projects in mind too.
  • On Friday, please use the south (gravel) parking lot, across the street from the Nature Store, as a drop off area.  There is free parking there if you want and it is easy to get in and out of for drop off.  I will meet you there at noon.
  • We do have covid protocols in place.  Mask wearing is required on campus, especially when working in close proximity or standing together for a briefing.  If you are going to be more than 6 feet apart from others for extended periods of time then you can remove your mask.  However, please have it readily available should someone move within 6 ft of you.  Our restrooms are not open to the public, but we do have a portapotty in the south parking lot.  Drinking water is not available.
  • Please dress for the weather in comfortable clothes that can get dirty.  Wear close toed shoes or boots for your safety, no sandals or flip flops.  If you have your own work gloves that you would like to use, please bring those as well.  And as stated above, you will need a mask.
  • Please bring snacks and water/drinks.  You do not need to bring any equipment as that will be provided.  If you don’t have gloves, we have lots of spare ones.  Bring your signed forms as either Vicky Medley (our Volunteer Manager) or myself will be collecting the
  • I will leave break times up to you.  We have a picnic table and benches near our main building, or another gathering area just a short distance from our south parking lot.

WASHINGTON PARK (12–3 pm):
Contact: Steve Pixley, Rachel Burlington

We look forward to your help Friday.  You are lucky too in that you will be led by our city’s Rose Garden Curator, Rachel Burlington and her top notch staff.   They will provide all the tools, instructions, and supervision you will need.  Your group will be split into three teams, each with a specific task.  Sorry, you may not move between tasks this year because we can’t share tools.  Covid safety response you know.  So you will either Weed rose beds; spread mulch or fertilize.

You should meet Rachel in the parking lot near the Rose Garden Store 850 SW Rose Garden Way. 850 SW Rose Garden Way - Google Maps
If drivers remain on site, Rachel will offer a parking pass.

You should,
  • Take this Heath Self Assessment and heed the results; Health Assessment Survey | Portland.gov
  • Arrive on time, ready to work
  • Wear clothing suitable for yard work.
  • Full foot covering shoes are required. Sneakers are fine, Sandals are bad.  NO EXPOSED TOES, period.
  • Bring garden/work gloves if you have them.  We will have some to loan, but best if you have your own.
  • It will be sunny so I suggest a hat and long pants and shirt,  Sunscreen is always a good precaution.
  • Bring a water bottle (filled).  Sorry we cannot provide any food or drink this year.
  • Listen to instructions and stay safe.  You will be the most important thing growing up there
