Community Support Opportunities

Dear Northwest Academy families,

This is a crazy time, and those of us who aren’t in the medical field or who perform essential work may wonder how they can contribute to the cause. Some people are making masks, but what about those of us who lack the sewing machine and/or crafting skills?

We thought it would be nice if we came together as a parent community, even though we can’t be together. We’ve decided to collect essential supplies for the Blanchet House and the Raphael House to help those who are most in need during this crisis. We’re hoping that the rest of the Northwest Academy community will join in.

And we’re making it easy: All you need to do is pick up a few extra items the next time you brave the grocery store and/or look at the items gathering dust in your closet or garage. You’ll leave your items outside on the morning of April 25, and a volunteer driver (more on that later) will swing by and collect it—no contact required!

Here are the items of greatest need:

  • Full-size shampoo and conditioner
  • African American–specific hair products (conditioners/hair lotions)
  • Body wash (large or small, scented or non)
  • Deodorant (both feminine and masculine)
  • Sleeping bags—used are fine
  • Tents—used are fine here, too
  • Blankets—of any shape or size
  • Backpacks—Does your student still have last year’s backpack (or this year’s—they probably won’t need them for a while!) hanging around?

If you would like to participate, please send email to PDXEssentialsDrive@hotmail.com by Monday, April 20 and include your name, pick-up address, and a phone where you can receive texts (in case the driver needs address clarification). You’ll receive a reminder email on the day before the pickup. That’s it. So easy!

For those of you with cabin fever, consider volunteering to be one of the pick-up drivers (or volunteer your newly minted teen driver!). We’ll need folks to collect the items from all over the city on the morning of April 25 and bring them to the school. We’ll also need a few drivers later in the day to swing by the school and take a load or two to Blanchet House or Raphael House’s drop-off locations. Both jobs will require no contact in order to make it safer. If you would like to be one of our driving heroes, please email PDXEssentialsDrive@hotmail.com and let us know. We’ll assign you to a quadrant of the city and provide you with a list of addresses.

Let’s come together and support people who are truly in need of our help! We hope you join in the effort!
