The Northwest Academy is an independent school, grades 6 through 12, committed to education through academics and the arts. The Academy offers motivated and talented students programs which emphasize and value creative thinking, individual choice, academic rigor, and self-discipline, taught by master teachers and professionals active in their fields.
The Northwest Academy program is based on the research of noted educators, especially Howard Gardner, whose work on multiple intelligences revealed the importance of arts-infused curriculum for the benefit of all students. The Northwest Academy has proven that the mix of arts training and rigorous academic work gives its graduates options and choices for the challenges and adventures of the 21st century.
The Northwest Academy accepts bright, highly creative students from all backgrounds. Placement at grade level is based on each applicant's accomplishments, current knowledge, and demonstrable skill, not chronological age. Link to admission application and information.
The Northwest Academy is registered with the Oregon State Department of Education and is fully accredited for secondary matriculation by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools and Colleges. Since its inception, school districts throughout the Portland metropolitan area have granted credit for part- and full-time courses taken at The Northwest Academy.

The Northwest Academy is an independent, non-profit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Oregon. The Northwest Academy is open to students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. It is governed by a Board of Directors according to policies set forward in the bylaws. The Northwest Academy has a 501(c)(3) classification and tax exempt status.
The Northwest Academy's campus is located in the center of the City of Portland's Cultural District at 12th and Main. The Main Street building boasts a small theater, multimedia lab, music recording lab, photography lab, and classrooms. Additional classrooms are located just across the street in a newly renovated facility. Science and visual arts reside in the south campus classroom building a few short steps from the main building. Dance and other activity classes are held at our Studio Building conveniently located a few blocks away. The Central Branch of the Multnomah County Library, a 24,000 square-foot library located just 3 blocks away, serves as the school's resource center. In addition, the neighborhood includes the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon History Center, Portland State University and Portland Center for the Performing Arts, all of which are involved in enhancing the school's curriculum.

HISTORY
After three years of research and preparation, The Northwest Academy offered its first elective program in the Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Media Arts in the Fall of 1996. Its full-time curriculum opened to 26 students in the Fall of 1997. The Middle School was inaugurated five years later, in the Fall of 2002. The Academy currently serves 115 students in grades 6 through 12. STUDENTS FACULTY
